I painted this piece when I first discovered I had been suffering from, and fit the description for, bipolar disorder, which was formerly known as manic-depression.

This made sense to me as I had experienced many long cycles of depression and elation, all the while, thinking that such swings in mood and effect were simply the result of problems in my life.

I thought it was normal to feel suicidal every once in a while. I thought it was normal to sleep for three hours a night and work three shifts and run a business and have a love life. I thought it was quite sane to think myself superman and rotten all in the same period.
