The Doors of Perception, a book by Aldous Huxley, explores the varieties of consciousness under the influence of psychoactive substances.

In this piece, I build an entire society of curious and loquacious doors. Some of them are interested in the painter himself, looking out through the canvas.

The door to the middle left is looking suspiciously at the door to her left, wondering, perhaps, if he knows what is behind his particular door.
