on magenta

Magenta is like hot salmon or dark bright pink with a hint of purple thrown in. It's more reddish than pinkish and I decided to write about it here because it's one of my favorite colors to use in painting.

It is hot and soothing, somewhere between powerful and gentle, a beautiful color that would be my favorite except I think it needs compliments.

Like a light burgundy, magenta is not often found in the natural world except in some flowers like orchids and in some roses. One could argue that this is no more than a hot pink and magenta often has that color hue, but it can also be dark and deep whereas pink and even hot pink are much more simple and without the purplish undertones.

Perhaps it comes out badly on this web page but its true hue is something difficult to capture because it is fleeting with just a little too much of this or that pigment nearly ruining it.

By painting with magenta, one can get more of the deep reds by layering it and more of the light pinks by keeping it thin. Perhaps nearly impossible to capture well on a bright screen, imagine just slightly more purple and red than is available on this background you are reading from now.
