To be interested is to have active attention on something as well as be happy about that attention.

One can be interested in a book, a companion, or just in staring off at a sunset. Interest is a light and easy positive emotion that can be sustained indefinitely if there are enough interesting things, people, or activities in one's environment.

Highly elevated moods, such as hypomania and feeling sublime are hyper-interested states where even normally mundane things can become objects of interest.

Opposite these higher emotions, the lower levels of emotional awareness, like in depression or anxiety, can take away the interest from a normally interesting thing.

Someone who is fairly depressed will have little or no interest in anything at all.
