One way to see justice is as the concept of fairness with respect to how society treats those who break its laws or mores.
There can be just punishment. However, justice is also applied to any situation where a hypocrite becomes a victim of the hypocrisy. For example, when a politician who rails against some activity, be it drugs or sex, gets outed for engaging in the very same activity, society often sees this as just.
There can also be justice in terms of those who are oppressed in one form or another. It can be said that it is just to be released and release others from hunger, violence, or servitude.
Justice and fairness are closely related, though justice has a connotation of fair retribution. What is just depends on who is asked the question.
Is justice served in Texas when they execute a mentally retarded person for murder? Is justice served when the Obama administration decides to move on rather than prosecute those in the Bush administration that led America to a false war in Iraq? Is justice served when Iranian security forces snipe unarmed protesters?
Is justice served when the Chinese jail people for wanting the freedom to have a say in how their government is run? Is justice served when the CIA tortures prisoners at Guantanamo Bay?
Is justice served when the Real IRA bombing in Omagh, Ireland, goes unpunished? Is justice served when multinational corporations exploit people in third world countries for their resources?
Is justice served when Israeli tanks demolish arab towns? Is justice served when Hamas bombs kill small children? Is justice served when the US military uses depleted uranium shells in it's M Abrams series of main battle tanks even though the tank pilots get radiation poisoning, anyone for hundreds of miles gets radiation poisoning, and people have to live with radiation for many years to come?
This is why I believe that the weaponization of nuclear weapons is something we should revert to only ballistic missles that should only be used if and when we want to end everything in a suicidal climax of insanity, not something we should use on fields of battle.
And, as for the insane climax, I would say we dismantle all nuclear weapons everywhere under new international laws that need to be both universal and strict. No nukes anywhere, ever. But, this kind of peace is not in cards for the world just yet.
How can the world become more just? Conspiracy theorists everywhere will hate me for saying this. We need one world police force. We need a powerful central Earth government that is set up to protect human rights and human environments everywhere. The Earth government would be charged with protecting the Earth's people, plants, and animals.
Also, the Earth government could protect the Earth's atmosphere and water. An Earth government could acquire the resources necessary for a technological transformation. The Earth government needs to exist to try criminals who engage in crimes against humanity or crimes against the Earth.
We need war crimes trials for the Bush administration. We need aid for the poorest countries. Perhaps this world unity will only lead to slavery, but, if there is only one government, who would be left to fight? Making this unity by force and martial law and big-brother style politics is no good way to do it at all.
Especially in America, where people will never let the government have their guns and, in a one world government, all men and women should have the right to bear arms in order that they may rise up and take that one world government should it become tyrannical. Tyranny is all around us and we should be able to peacefully enact justice.
For example, every country gets a senator and every fifty million people get a representative. The body would exist and meet through technological means.
How do we ensure that this one world government keeps the peace rather than takes control of everything?
An International Bill of Human Rights, which already exists and is being worked on here.
