the philosophy of movies or film

Movies can be one of the highest forms of artisitic expression, capturing or documenting anything in reality or in fiction.

Movies take photography to a level of motion and, in cases after the silent era, add music and sound to them.

Actors, musicians, writers, and producers all converge to make something that can affect viewers in myriad ways.

Like most art, most movies are not very good. There can be something entertaining about bad movies and, in some cases, the worse the movie the better it is to a segment of viewers who relish "B" movies.

However, some movies are exceptional, and can be considered some of the greatest works of art human kind has ever made.

Like preference for color, preference for particular films is something that can not be argued well.

I prefer films that have an allegorical metaphysical side to them.

I think there are brilliant films in all genres. And I will hereafter list and briefly describe some of my favorite works and why I appreciate them so much. Like many in the world, I've spent thousands of hours taking in movies. I hope to add to this list as time permits, but these are some of my favorites in various genres. I will be adding more movies as time permits.

COMEDY:

Office Space (1999) (star12star12star12star12star12) is a brilliant comedy that parodies the modern working environment and life inside an office cubicle. When briefly working in such environments, I find the commentary of this film to be absolutely true in that most people are doing very little, if anything.

DOCUMENTARY:

Howard Zinn: You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train (2004) (starstarstarstarstar) is a film about the life and work of Howard Zinn, American historian and political activist for the poor and underrepresented minorities in American political and economic history.

The Men Who Killed Kennedy (1988) (starstarstarstarstar) is a telling documentary about the conspiracy behind and actual events leading up to and occuring around the assasination of J.F.K. from the perspectives of those who were eye-witnesses to the coverup.

Zeitgeist 1, 2, 3 (1997) (starstarstarstarstar) are a series of documentaries that attempt to wake up human kind from the slavish and sheepish slumber they have been put into by corporate media and advertising. It highlights the injustices of the capitalist pyramid scheme we all live within. These movies are excellent and offer solutions for how humans can change. DRAMA:

As Far as MY Feet Will Carry Me (2003) [German] (star12star12star12star12star12) is a film about a World War II German soldier who escapes a Soviet prison work camp and attempts the journey home, over harsh icey terrain, to see his family.

Brooklyn's Finest (2009) (star12star12star12star12star12) is a film that is about three very different New York police officers whose paths collide in a Brooklyn housing development.

Cool Hand Luke (1967) (star12star12star12star12star12) is the story of a human trying to break free from the rules of society and of life itself, only to find himself captured and returned to the prison he has both made for himself and in which society has created for him.

Fight Club (1999) (star12star12star12star12) examines the mind of a hallucinating individual who has become two personalities who are unaware of each other. Also, it looks at the problem of male aggression in modern society where such features of personality have been contained in an unhealthy way.

Full Metal Jacket (1987) (star12star12star12star12star12) is one of Stanley Kubrick's best films and, in a serious and violent way, depicts the insanity of war against the backdrop of the Vietnam conflict. The acting and cinematography is superb as is the cynical and sarcastic nature of much of the dialogue.

Gangs of New York (2002) (star12star12star12star12) is a dramatized account of the various gangs and groups of people that ruled New York during the early days of the city when there was much less law and order throughout than in present times.

Heat (1995) (star12star12star12star12star12) is a film about bank and armored car robbers in Los Angeles who undertake well researched and daring heists. Features Al Pacino and Robert DiNero opposite each other.

Stander (2003) (star12star12star12star12star12) is a movie about a South-African police officer who becomes so disillusioned with aparthied racism and corruption, that he begins a secret life as a bank robber in order to take from the power structure that he sees as unjust.

Taxi Driver (1976) (star12star12star12star12star12) delves into the mind and madness of a solitary human male who lives in isolation and whose mind becomes warped and deranged as he begins to see violence as a way to impress his love interest. One of Robert DeNiro's best performances.

The Good Shepherd (2006) (star12star12star12star12star12) depicts the moral dillemma of being in a covert government role where emotions and family must take a back seat to the shadowy world of spies, assassination, and espionage. One of Matt Damon's best.

The Lookout (2007) (star12star12star12star12star12) is a simple movie about a bank robbery in which the lookout is a young deaf boy who gets sucked into the plot that takes a number of unexpected twists and turns in its execution.

The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006) (star12star12star12star12star12) is a movie about the struggle of young Irish freedom fighters in the 1920's.

Three Days of the Condor (1975) (star12star12star12star12star12) is another movie that shows how everyone is expendable to covert government agencies if they are thought to know too much. Robert Redford is excellent in this piece.

Trainspotting (1996) (star12star12star12star12star12) is a movie about a group of young Scottish heroin addicts and the trials they endure as their lives and those around them descend into drug fueled depravity and death.

FANTASY:

Altered States (1980) (star12star12star12star12) is the story of a scientist who goes on a psychonautic quest to find the meaning of human existence by attempting to regress to the dawn of creation and the well of consciousness. It shows the awesome power and danger inherent in our being. I twice met William Hurt and told him this was one of my favorite films by him.

Let the Right One In (2008) [Swedish] (star12star12star12star12star12) is a Swedish film that depicts a fantastic scenario of a young couple, one of whom is a vampire, and the relationship they form in a subtle, slow-paced drama where the viewer is immersed in their feelings and confusion about each other.

Pan's Labyrinth (2006) [Spanish] (star12star12star12star12star12) is a Spanish film that looks at a particular instance towards the end of the Spanish Civil War in which a young girl becomes part of a fantastic story line led by mythical creatures.

Run Lola Run (1998) [German] (star12star12star12star12star12) is German film that portrays the possibilities and outcomes in various scenarios and it shows how even the smallest incidents can have cascading consequences for the outcome of a situation.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009) (star12star12star12star12star12) is a fantastic story of a troop of street and stage performers who allow visitors to enter the mind of their leader. The last film of Heath Ledger, it was completed with the help of a number of actors, including Jude Law and Johnny Depp playing Ledger's part.

HORROR:

Event Horizon (1997) (star12star12star12star12) is a fantasy science-fiction movie where human technology in the future has opened a gateway to hell. Sam Neil and Lawrence Fishburne are excellent in this gory and frightening piece.

SCIENCE FICTION:

A Clockwork Orange (1971) (star12star12star12star12star12) depicts a dystopian future where nihilism has taken hold of the minds of the central characters. Ultra-violence and a baby-like language have become the outlets of the new generation of humans. One of Stanley Kubrick's best.

Donnie Darko, the Director's Cut (2001), (star12star12star12star12star12) is a movie that takes the possibility of god using a dead human being for the purpose of affecting the living before being returned to the infinite computer.

Solaris (2002) (star12star12star12star12star12) is an excellent science-fiction piece that shows the extreme difficulty or even impossibility of our minds being capable of communicating with a far more advanced being. In this case, the being takes memories from humans and recreates the people and places in these memories in a way that is both disturbing and intriguing.

Starship Troopers (1997) (star12star12star12star12) is a science-fiction film that may not be perfect with respect to some of the acting or the script, but it does an excellent job portraying the military meritocracy that allows for those fighting the battles to be the sole citizens with voting rights. Shouldn't those who are risking their lives be the ones to decide on going to war?

THRILLER:
